Meet the Curators
Blair French is Director, Curatorial and Digital at the MCA. He was previously Executive Director, Artspace Visual Arts Centre and has also held senior curatorial and managerial positions at Australian Centre for Photography - where he worked on Australian Perspecta 1997 and 1999 - and Performance Space. His publications include three books on Australian photography and contemporary art, as well as numerous edited artist monographs. His curatorial projects include the 6th (2011-12) and 7th (2013) iterations of the SCAPE Public Art Christchurch Biennial and he has worked on solo exhibitions with a wide range of artists including Chicks on Speed, Simon Denny, Shaun Gladwell, Ho Tzu Nyen, Peter Robinson and Francis Upritchard amongst many others. Blair holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and has lectured at the University of Waikato, the University of New South Wales, and at the University of Western Sydney.
Lisa Havilah is the Director of Carriageworks. Since 2012 she has implemented an ambitious contemporary multi-arts program that is unrelenting in its support of artists. Under her leadership Carriageworks has experienced extraordinary audience, artistic and commercial growth, resulting in it becoming the fastest growing cultural precinct in Australia. Previously, she was Director of Campbelltown Arts Centre, where she pioneered an internationally renowned contemporary arts program that brought together culturally and socially diverse communities. She has been named one of Sydney's top 100 influential people.
Anneke Jaspers is Curator, Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where she works across the collection and exhibitions. Her focus is on socially-engaged, situational and interdisciplinary practices; in this spirit she has curated exhibitions with artists including Agatha Gothe-Snape, Bianca Hester, Lucas Ihlein, Sriwhana Spong and, most recently, Barbara Cleveland. In 2016, she collaborated with curator Adrian Heathfield to realise the performance program ghost telephone for the 20th Biennale of Sydney. She has published widely on contemporary art and her editorial projects include the award-winning publication for the major survey exhibition Pop to popism in 2014.
Nina Miall has been Curator at Carriageworks, Sydney, since 2012. Recent projects include Nick Cave’s HEARD·SYD (2016), Francesco Clemente: Encampment (2016), 24 Frames Per Second (2015), and Tehching Hsieh’s One Year Performance: 1980-1981 (2014). Formerly a Director of Haunch of Venison in London, she has curated solo exhibitions by Philippe Parreno, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Zhang Huan, and Jitish Kallat, as well as surveys of contemporary South African art and Soviet Non-Conformist art. Nina has a Masters in contemporary art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. From 2006-2001, she was a Trustee of the non-profit space Beaconsfield, and from 2001-2005 she was Head of Public Programmes for the Royal Academy of Arts, London. She has written and lectured widely on contemporary art in Australia and the UK.
Wayne Tunnicliffe is Head Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where he works across the Australian collection and exhibition programs as well as overseeing the Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills. He has collaborated on the complete redisplay of the Australian collections in 2015 and in 2012, and his exhibitions and publications include Pop to Popism (2014-15), The John Kaldor Family Collection (book, 2012), Wilderness (2010), Tim Johnson: painting ideas (2009), Adam Cullen, let’s get lost (2008), Contemporary (book, 2006), Robert Owen, different lights cast different shadows (2004), Simryn Gill (2002). Most recently he was curatorial advisor for Australia’s Impressionists (2016-17) at the National Gallery, London.
